2024 Reading List

Natalie’s 2024 Reading List

Although I read as enthusastically in 2024 as I read in 2023, I had a strange, unexpected health issue that landed me in the Emergency Room at the University of Michigan Hospital. While it turned out to be a minor issue (thank goodness!), I was in the hospital for testing for two full days. It ended up being an episode of optic neuritis that was a rare, but known, side-effect of the COVID vaccine.

Regardless, this incident set me back a few days and a few thousand dollars. It  disrupted things, so I let some tasks go, such as my year-end book review.

The end of 2025 is proving to be calmer and more reflective than 2024, so I’m sharing two reading lists this year!

General observations about 2024’s books and their authors:

  • I was the beneficiary of solid recommendations from Audible and Hoopla. Based on what I’d read, these software tools provided outstanding recommendations such as The Frozen River, Lessons in Chemistry, Hello Beautiful, and The Berry Pickers.
  • Although this author is very well-known, I hadn’t read any of his books until my Dad recommended The Prince of Tides, by Pat Conroy. I absolutely loved this book and quickly read another of his: The Water is Wide, which I also enjoyed.
  • My addiction to Louise Penny’s Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series intensified in 2024. I read 8 books in her series this year. I loved them all.
  • Some standout authors new to me in 2024 were Ariel Lawhon, Gabrielle Zevin, and Ann Napoitano.
  • My least favorite books this year were: The Book of Goose and Psycho Cybernetics.
  • Finally, I read 7 non-fiction books this year and 48 fiction books. I’m quite alright with this breakdown at least for now!

Just a reminder about how my ratings and categorization works:

  1. For gold, silver, and honorable mentions, I list the books in order of my favorites. This is VERY hard to do, and I’d guess the list would be slightly different on any given day.
  2. For “the rest” I list these in alphabetical order by the author’s last name to make it easier to search for authors you know.
  3. I put the Louise Penny books in chronological order, as it really is best to read this series from start to finish.
  4. You can click each image to go straight to the Amazon page to purchase it if you’d like.
